Our Main Stage Speakers
Michael E. Kitces, MSFS, MTAX, CFP?, CLU, ChFC, RHU, REBC, CASL, is a partner and the Director of Research for Pinnacle Advisory Group, a private wealth management firm located in Columbia, Maryland that oversees approximately $1.8 billion of client assets. In addition, he is a co-founder of the XY Planning Network and New Planner Recruiting, the former Practitioner Editor of the Journal of Financial Planning, and the publisher of the popular financial planning industry blog Nerd?s Eye View through his website www.Kitces.com, dedicated to advancing knowledge in financial planning.
Beyond his website, Michael is an active writer and editor across the industry and has been featured in publications including Financial Planning, the Journal of Financial Planning, Journal of Retirement Planning, Practical Tax Strategies, and Leimberg Information Services, as well as The Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, CNBC PowerLunch, NBC Nightly News, and more. In addition, Michael has co-authored numerous books, including ?The Annuity Advisor? with John Olsen (now in 3rd edition), the first balanced and objective book on annuities written for attorneys, accountants, and financial planners, and ?Tools & Techniques of Retirement Income Planning? with Steve Leimberg and others.
Michael is one of the 2010 recipients of the Financial Planning Association?s ?Heart of Financial Planning? awards for his dedication to advancing the financial planning profession. In addition, he has variously been recognized as financial planning's "Deep Thinker," a "Legacy Builder," an "Influencer," a "Mover & Shaker," part of the ?Power 20,? and a "Rising Star in Wealth Management" by industry publications. These awards were presented to honor Michael?s active work in the financial planning community, which currently includes serving as a member of the Editorial Review Board for the Journal of Financial Planning, national chair of the Financial Planning Section for the Society of Financial Services Professionals, and numerous other boards and committees for the Financial Planning Association and the Society of Financial Services Professionals at the local and National levels. Michael is also a co-founder of NexGen, a community of the next generation of financial planners that aims to ensure the transference of wisdom, tradition, and integrity, from the pioneers of financial planning to the next generation of the profession.
As an organizational development consultant and executive coach, Kate Livingston’s focus is on helping teams and clients build effective working relationships to improve performance. Operating across a range of industries, Kate has found that what many professionals share in common is the desire to better communicate and to realize
that these skills evolve over one’s lifetime. Using research from adult development, Kate adopts an interactive approach to stimulate collaboration, active listening and

presenter in Executive Education programs internationally, including Universidad de la Empresa (Argentina), Universidad de Monterrey (Mexico) and Ibero University
Kate holds a master’s degree in adult development and psychology from Harvard University, and a master’s degree in art history from Pennsylvania State University. She
draws from both of these fields when helping clients see how they frame and address their challenges. Trained in executive coaching at Columbia University, she works with
clients to identify strengths while exploring behavioral patterns and unchallenged assumptions that can limit professional growth and personal aspirations.
Paul Nicely is a vice president of Eaton Vance Distributors and a regional sales representative for the
firm’s independent/financial institution sales team, responsible for marketing Eaton Vance products and
services in Washington and Oregon. In his role, he consults with advisors on topics ranging from portfolio
construction, economic and capital market research, to practice management and business development.
He joined Eaton Vance in 2003.
Paul began his career in the investment management industry in 2002. Before joining Eaton Vance, he
was an independent advisor for Reinhard & Associates, a branch of Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc.
Paul earned a B.S. in business administration from the Universit y of Delaware.
Choate is the managing director of SA-720TM, a consulting firm providing seminars on cross-functional teamwork and strategic planning based on principles derived from the U.S. Special Operations community. John began his professional career as a naval officer in the SEAL teams. Following completion of SEAL training as the officer-in-charge of class 218, he spent the next 12 years in both active and reserve billets deploying overseas in support of national security objectives.
In addition to receiving various personal awards for classified special operations, more significantly, his teams have received numerous distinguished awards including three Navy Unit Commendation medals, two Meritorious Unit Commendation medals, and the Presidential Unit Citation personally awarded to his SEAL platoon by the President of the United States. In 2006, John founded the Procinctu Group, a global risk management firm providing specialized security services and training to U.S. and foreign government entities, multinational corporations and select individuals. He is currently the chairman of the board.
In 2010, John was recruited to serve as the CEO of Defense Venture Group (“DVG”), part of the $1.2 billion portfolio of J.F. Lehman & Company, a private equity firm.
In 2016, John was recruited to serve as the Executive Director of Security for the Wynn Resorts in Las Vegas with responsibility for designing, implementing and managing a state-of-the-art security system comprised of over 400 personnel and a myriad technologies.
John’s professional experience is backed with a B.S. in History from the United States Naval Academy, as well as an M.A. in National Security Studies from California State University. He also holds an MBA from Columbia University (finance) and an MBA from London Business School (strategy), as well as a Certificate in Hotel Revenue Management from Cornell University.
John is a member of Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO), a board member of Pike Electric, a founder and former director of the nonprofit Phoenix Patriot Foundation, and sits on the Service Academy Selection Board for certain members of Congress. An avid waterman, marginal piano player, and a truly horrific golfer, he spends most of his free time with his wife, Tammy, and two young children, Sofie and Tristan.
Ryan Donohue is an advisor education specialist and national speaker for Vanguard Financial Advisor Services™. He is responsible for presenting Vanguard analysis and industry research to financial advisors and other financial services professionals.
Before his current role, Mr. Donohue was a senior internal sales executive covering the Southern New England territory. Previously he supported RIA and Bank clients nationally and also worked with high-net worth individuals in Vanguard’s Flagship Services Department.
Mr. Donohue earned a B.S. in Supply Chain Management and Business Operations from California State University of Long Beach and an M.B.A. from La Salle University with a focus in finance. He holds FINRA Series 6, 7, and 63 licenses.
Susan Olson is a Vice President - Government Relations at Natixis Investment Managers – US Distribution. In this role, she serves as point person for the firm, and helps the firm maintain awareness of the regulatory environment, as well as ongoing governmental issues and initiatives. From 2005 - 2015, she served as Managing Regional Director, IAG Mid-Atlantic on the National Sales Team. Prior to joining the firm in 2005, she was a vice president and regional manager at SunAmerica Mutual Funds covering Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana. She started in the financial services industry with UBS/PaineWebber in 1995.
Ms. Olson received her BA in international business with a minor in Spanish from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She is FINRA Series 7, 63 and 65 licensed. Ms. Olson is a Chairperson of Rock Spring UCC community outreach program, Graduate and Member of Leadership Arlington and Volunteer at Arlington Street People's Assistance Network.
She is also Board Chair of OAR, Offender Aid and Restoration, a community-based restorative justice organization that works with individuals and their families who have been impacted by the Criminal Justice system to help them build productive and responsible lives.
Damon Novelli is a Vice President and Regional Director with Legg Mason covering the Pacific Northwest region for the Wirehouse and Independent Advisor Channels. In his role as a Regional Director, Damon uses his extensive knowledge of the investment industry and training in business communications to help investment professionals effectively present the value they offer to their clients. He has expertise in Mutual Funds, Separately Managed Accounts (SMAs), Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) and alternative investment vehicles. Prior to joining Legg Mason in 2012, Damon was an Executive Communications Consultant at Fusion, where he trained financial services industry executives on communication and presentation techniques. Previously, he was a Sales Director at Principal Financial, where he wholesaled mutual funds and retirement products. Damon started his career as an analyst at the WM Group of Funds in 2000.
Damon received a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and Economics from Eastern Washington University and attended Gonzaga University for graduate studies. Damon also has FINRA Series 7 and 63 licenses.
A native of Spokane, Washington, Damon now resides in Seattle with his wife, Carrie Clark, an accomplished singer and songwriter, and his son, Ryder. In his spare time, Damon enjoys outdoor sports of all kinds, including mountain biking, fly fishing and skiing.
